The Jamie Fund - something to make a difference
95. Every little counts
Thursday 31 July 2003
This morning Denise Robertson and I went to Aviemore to open the bank account for
The Jamie Fund. Imagine that, Jamie Man - a special fund with your name on it!
Yes, in some respects it is a sad business. But I hope we will at least be able to achieve something that you can be proud of with this fund. Something that will truly make a difference.
At first sight, some donations might appear to stand out. It's tempting to focus on the generosity and significance of the bigger contributors. But then I recall the old parable of the widow's mite, which reminds us that it's not the size of the gift that counts. (This causes my thoughts to leap ahead to a day in March 2004 and the anonymous wee friend who left you a red toy car and fourteen pence beside your headstone).
Every donation, whether small or large, comes with its own story. From individuals whose lives have been touched by you in some way or another, Jamie Man. People who think of you now with fondness and who will carry a memory of you in their hearts for the rest of their days. I thank them, one and all.
